Coming off hot the heels of a study by Hastings Professor Feldman that more than half of all patent lawsuits are being brought by patent trolls, Google, an obvious target for NPEs, is trying to get the FTC and DOJ to take a closer look at what all these lawsuits is doing to competition. Interesting considering that Google is also defensively buying up companies like Motorola so they can grow their own portfolio – be it for defensive or offensive reasons.

I wonder how viable the proposed solutions that the speakers spoke of last week are in getting passed (e.g. shifting costs to the PAEs/NPE’s if they do not prevail in litigation) since this definitely seems like a growing concern, not only for big companies like Google, but also for small companies like Fototime that we read about last week.
